How to study psychology and remember the studies you read

Keep psychology theories, research methods, and findings connected. Build useful study notes, practise recall, and prepare clear answers for class and exams.

The reading is finished, but the study names are already running together. One experiment involved a word list, another used pictures, and the detail needed for the next seminar is buried somewhere in the notes.

A useful psychology study routine keeps each research question connected to the people, methods, and findings behind it. That gives a name something to stand for. It also gives you material to work with when a question asks for an explanation, a comparison, or an argument.

Start with one study from the current week's reading. Build a short account of it, then practise answering questions about it with the reading closed.

Keep the study together in your notes

For each important study, record the researcher names and year alongside five questions:

  • What were they asking? State the research question in plain language.
  • Who took part? Identify the participants and the relevant setting.
  • What did they do? Describe the task, what was compared, and what was measured.
  • What did they find? Record the result precisely enough to distinguish it from the prediction.
  • What does it tell us? Explain which claim the result supports and what remains uncertain.

Keep a link or page reference with the entry so the original is easy to find. Use the course objectives and reading guidance to decide which studies need this level of detail.

The method deserves more than a label such as “experiment” or “survey.” An experiment comparing two ways of studying and a survey asking about study habits answer different questions. Include the detail that makes the design understandable.

There is no need to copy the entire paper. A few accurate sentences under these questions can give you enough material to explain the study, revisit a missing detail, or compare it with another finding.

See how one research finding fits together

Consider an experiment on learning from memory tests, reported by Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke in 2006. A compact study note could look like this:

Now cover the method and finding rows. Explain what was compared, how memory was measured, and why the delay before the final test matters. Reopen the source to check any missing detail.

Turn each note into questions you can answer

Once the study makes sense, use questions to practise recalling its parts. Start with focused prompts:

  • What did the participants actually do?
  • What was the comparison?
  • Which result would support the researchers' prediction?
  • What result was observed?
  • How does this finding relate to the topic from the lecture?

Then combine the parts: “Explain this study to someone who has not read it.” Say or write the answer before opening the note.

Research supports including this kind of recall in a study routine. A 2021 review of 222 classroom studies found an average learning benefit from quizzing, with results varying across settings and quiz designs. It supports regular practice answering questions; it does not specify one required flashcard format.

Use the comparison with your notes to choose the next task. If the finding is clear but the procedure is vague, revisit the method and explain it again. If two researcher names are swapped, put the studies beside each other and identify the difference.

Put similar theories beside each other

When two explanations are easy to confuse, make the difference explicit. For each one, write the behavior it explains, the process it proposes, and a course example that illustrates it.

Next, choose a scenario from your reading. Explain which theory fits it and name the detail that led to that choice. If more than one explanation could fit, describe what further information would help distinguish them.

Keep the comparison small enough to work through carefully. Two familiar theories from the same topic make a manageable starting point. Follow their definitions in the course material, and avoid forcing a distinction that the material does not support.

This exercise gives you practice explaining a choice, which is useful preparation when the assignment asks you to compare or apply ideas.

Explain why a limitation matters

“Small sample” and “not realistic” are incomplete evaluation points. A useful comment identifies a feature of the study and explains how it affects the conclusion.

Suppose a hypothetical survey finds that students who attend more lectures also receive higher grades. A careful evaluation would say that attendance and grades are related in this sample, while the survey alone cannot establish whether attending caused the higher grades. Use the same approach for other details:

  • Participants: Which people were studied, and who else would need to be studied before extending the conclusion?
  • Measurement: What was recorded, and how closely does that measure match the concept being discussed?
  • Comparison: What differed between the groups or conditions besides the factor of interest?
  • Setting: Which features of the task might change how the finding applies elsewhere?

These are questions to investigate, not criticisms to attach automatically. A strength can be worth explaining too: for example, a clearly defined measure makes it possible to say exactly what changed.

When the reading discusses later research, record what that work found and which part of the original claim it supports or challenges. Keep the later study's citation alongside the point so that the evidence stays traceable.

Practise the answer your assignment asks for

An essay, a multiple-choice question, and a methods report call for different work. Check the instructions before deciding how to practise.

For an essay, start with the actual question and a brief answer to it. Choose evidence that supports that answer, then explain what each study contributes. Add evaluation where it changes the argument. The required length and marking criteria should guide how much evidence to include.

Try planning one paragraph with the notes closed:

  1. State the point the paragraph will make.
  2. Identify the relevant study.
  3. Give the finding and enough method detail to make it understandable.
  4. Explain how the evidence answers the question.
  5. Add a qualification if it affects that conclusion.

After checking the plan, write the paragraph. That final step lets you practise turning separate facts into a readable explanation.

For multiple-choice practice, explain why the selected answer fits the question and why a plausible alternative does not. For a methods report, work through the design and analysis tasks in the course examples.
