Does music help you study? What works for reading, memory, and focus
Learn when music can help a study session, when lyrics may interfere, and how to test your own playlist using reading, recall, and quiz results.
Music can solve one study problem while creating another. A familiar playlist may make it easier to sit down or stay with repetitive work, but songs with lyrics can make reading and remembering harder. The same playlist can feel useful during one assignment and become a distraction during another.
A useful choice starts with the work in front of you. Match the sound to the task, use quiet as a comparison, and judge the result by what you can explain or answer afterward.
The short answer: It depends on the work
Studies of background music point in several directions. A 2023 meta-analysis of 47 studies found a small average benefit after pooling music played before or during learning assessments, but music played only during assessment did not show a statistically reliable benefit. A 2022 systematic review of 95 articles found different patterns across cognitive tasks. The task, type of music, and listener can all affect the result.
One pattern appears more consistently than the rest. Music with lyrics is more likely to interfere with memory and language-heavy work than instrumental music. Instrumental music often has little measurable effect, although it can still interfere with difficult tasks and some forms of recall.

- Begin dense reading, writing, memorization, and difficult problem solving in quiet.
- If quiet makes it harder to begin or stay with the work, try low-volume instrumental music.
- Save songs with lyrics for routine work that does not require close reading or recall.
- Check the result with an answer, problem, or quiz instead of relying only on how productive the session felt.

Why lyrics can interfere with reading and memory
Reading a textbook, drafting an essay, and learning vocabulary all require attention to words. Lyrics add another stream of words at the same time. Even when the song is familiar, its language can compete with the language needed for the assignment.
A 2022 systematic review examined 154 experiments across memory, language, attention, reasoning, and other cognitive tasks. The authors found the clearest negative pattern for music with lyrics, especially on memory- and language-related tasks. Instrumental music was less consistently disruptive.
A 2023 experiment with college students reached a similar result under controlled conditions. Participants completed verbal memory, visual memory, reading comprehension, and arithmetic tasks in silence, with instrumental lo-fi music, and with music containing lyrics. The lyrical music reduced performance on the two memory tasks and reading comprehension. Its effect on arithmetic was uncertain, and the lo-fi music produced no credible improvement or decline.
For a language-heavy assignment, lyrics add a plausible source of interference.
What changes when the music has no lyrics
Removing lyrics addresses the most consistent source of interference. Across the research, instrumental music has produced positive, negative, and neutral results depending on the task and study design.
In the review’s exploratory analysis, instrumental music was linked with poorer performance on serial recall and on the limited set of difficult tasks studied. That pattern is a reason for caution, not a rule that task difficulty determines whether music will interfere. A playlist that seems harmless while organizing notes may feel very different while tracing a complicated argument or learning a multistep process.
Lo-fi deserves the same measured treatment. In the 2023 college-student experiment, instrumental lo-fi music neither improved nor credibly harmed performance. Treat it as one instrumental option to test rather than a proven study aid.
A favorite playlist can still have a useful job
Performance is only part of a study session. Starting, staying in the chair, and tolerating repetitive work also matter.
In one study of 40 college students, preferred background music reduced reports of mind-wandering and increased reports of task focus during a low-demand sustained-attention task. The experiment measured attention during a simple task, so it cannot establish gains in comprehension or long-term memory. It does help explain why music can be useful for one part of studying and distracting during another.
Use that difference deliberately. A favorite song may help with opening the laptop, sorting readings, formatting citations, or completing familiar drills. When the work shifts to understanding a difficult section or producing an answer from memory, the sound can change too.
Match the sound to the study task
Reading a textbook or research paper
Start with quiet for material that is dense, unfamiliar, or full of new terms. If silence makes the environment uncomfortable, try instrumental music at a level that stays in the background. After each section, close the source and write or say the main idea. Difficulty producing that explanation matters more than whether the reading felt smooth.
Writing an essay or discussion post
Drafting requires language generation, so lyrics can compete with the sentence you are trying to build. Instrumental music may work during outlining or formatting, while silence may be more useful when the argument or wording requires close attention. Use the finished paragraph as the test: does it make the intended point, and can every claim be supported?
Memorizing terms, processes, or formulas
Keep the recall attempt quiet at first. Retrieval practice—answering from memory with flashcards, practice questions, or a closed-note explanation—generally strengthens later learning compared with restudying, although direct evidence on music during retrieval practice is sparse. If music remains part of the session, compare later accuracy under the same conditions rather than assuming that familiarity with the playlist improves recall.
Solving math, chemistry, or physics problems
The complexity of the problem matters. Familiar calculations may leave enough attention for background music, while a new problem type can require every step to be held and checked. Try the hardest part in quiet before deciding that the entire assignment needs a soundtrack.
Organizing files and completing routine work
Music is easier to justify when the task is familiar and mistakes are easy to catch. Renaming notes, organizing a course folder, checking a reading list, and formatting a document place lighter demands on memory than learning a new chapter. This is where enjoyment and willingness to continue may be more valuable than a small difference in cognitive performance.
Studying in a noisy place
The available choice may be music or nearby conversation rather than music or silence. Try familiar instrumental music that makes the surrounding speech less noticeable without becoming the new center of attention. Test your study music with actual course material
A playlist can feel calming while the material remains difficult to retrieve. A personal test gives you better information about your own work than mood alone.
Use two or more pairs of comparable topics from the same course. Do not compare an easy review chapter with the hardest new unit and attribute the difference to music.

What about classical music and the Mozart effect?
Much of the classical music used for studying has no lyrics, which may make it less distracting during verbal work. The original “Mozart effect” experiment reported a brief change on a particular kind of spatial task; it did not test lasting intelligence or general studying.
A meta-analysis of nearly 40 studies found little evidence for a specific performance benefit from Mozart compared with other music. Choose classical music when it suits the task or makes the session easier to begin.

Judging the session by enjoyment
A pleasant session can still produce weak recall. Finish with a question, explanation, or problem that makes the learning visible.
Treating all instrumental music as equivalent
Music without lyrics can still be loud, surprising, or absorbing. Change the track or use quiet when attention keeps moving toward the music.
Using one result as a permanent answer
Topic difficulty, sleep, stress, and prior knowledge all change performance. Look for a repeated pattern across similar tasks before changing every study session.
