How to study accounting without memorizing every journal entry
Learn how to study accounting by analyzing transactions, choosing the right accounts, practicing journal entries, and fixing the mistakes that keep recurring.
The first accounting examples often feel manageable because the chapter has already told you what each one is about. Cash transactions appear in one section, adjusting entries in another, and the example above the question shows which steps to follow.
Then several transaction types appear together. Before any numbers can be entered, you have to decide what happened, which accounts changed, and when the change belongs in the records.
That decision is the part to practice. A journal entry is easier to build when it is the final record of reasoning you can explain, rather than a debit-and-credit pattern recalled from a similar-looking example.
Start with what happened to the business
Before choosing a debit or credit, rewrite the transaction in plain language. Ask:
- What did the business receive or give up?
- Did it earn revenue or incur an expense now?
- Does it owe something, or is another party obligated to pay it?
- Does any part of the transaction belong to a later period?
These questions slow down the first step, but they can keep one mistaken label from carrying through the rest of the entry.
In introductory financial accounting, the accounting equation gives you a way to check that interpretation:
Assets = Liabilities + Equity
The equation does more than confirm that the two sides balance. It helps you identify the economic effect before account rules are added. - Describe the event. Write one sentence explaining what changed for the business.

- Apply the debit and credit rules. Record the entry only after the account changes are clear.
- Check the result. Confirm that total debits equal total credits and that the entry tells the same story as the transaction.

Work through one transaction from beginning to end
Suppose a tutoring business receives $1,200 in advance for four months of service. No tutoring has been provided yet.
At the date of payment:
- The business has received cash, so cash increases by $1,200.
- The business still owes the customer four months of service, so unearned revenue, a liability, increases by $1,200.
- Revenue has not been earned yet.
The entry is:

After one month of tutoring has been provided, assume that $300 has been earned. The business now owes less service, so unearned revenue decreases by $300. Revenue increases by the same amount.

Now change one fact at a time. What if the tutoring happened before the customer paid? What if all four months of service had already been completed? Keeping the amount constant while changing the timing makes it easier to see which account treatment follows from which fact.
Study worked examples without copying them
A worked example becomes an active exercise when you explain why each step follows from the one before it. A 2018 meta-analysis found an average learning benefit from prompts that asked students to explain material, including worked examples, with results varying across settings (Bisra et al., 2018). Apply the idea to accounting by explaining the account choices, timing, and treatment in the example you are studying.
Use that idea cautiously and make the explanation specific to the accounting in front of you:
- Why were these accounts selected?
- What caused each account to increase or decrease?
- Why does recognition happen in this period?
- How does the entry affect the financial statements?
After studying the example, cover it and solve a nearby question. Then compare every stage of your reasoning with the answer. Copying the finished entry can show you the format, but it cannot reveal whether you would have selected those accounts on your own.
If the blank page is still too difficult, remove the support gradually. Start with the account names provided and complete the increases, decreases, debits, and credits. On the next attempt, choose the accounts too. The goal is to reach a full solution without the example remaining visible.
Mix transaction types after you can solve them separately
Chapter headings give away useful information. A question under “accrued expenses” has already narrowed the decision, while an exam or cumulative assignment may not provide that label.
Once you can solve several transaction types on their own, practice a small mixed set. Leave the topic labels off and identify the transaction before completing the entry. In a classroom study of seventh-grade mathematics, students who practiced different question types in an interleaved order performed better on later tests than students whose practice was grouped by type (Rohrer, Dedrick, and Stershic, 2015). Begin with three or four transaction types you have already learned. Adding unfamiliar material too soon makes it hard to tell whether the problem is classification or missing knowledge.

“Question 6 was wrong” is not enough information to guide another study session. Classify the error at the point where the reasoning first broke:
