How to read a textbook and remember what you read

Use a section-by-section textbook reading method that turns each chapter into questions, checked explanations and later retrieval practice.

Week two arrives with a 52-page chapter due before Thursday's lecture. The first pages make sense, the examples are clear, and several lines look worth highlighting. An hour later, the book closes and a simple question remains: what could be explained without the page open?

A textbook chapter needs two kinds of work. Reading builds the first understanding of the material. A closed-book attempt shows what remains available after the headings, diagrams and sentences disappear, and repeated retrieval with feedback can strengthen later retention.

Reading is necessary, but it cannot check itself

The page supplies definitions, examples and connections while it is open. That support makes difficult ideas easier to follow, which is exactly what a textbook should do. It does not show whether the same idea can be recalled, explained or applied later.

Highlighting can help mark a definition, a claim or a confusing passage for another look. Rereading can clarify a section, especially after an unsuccessful attempt or when the second reading is separated from the first. Neither action, by itself, asks for an answer with the source closed.

Decide what the chapter needs to help you do

Start with the course, not the first sentence on the page. Look at the learning objectives, assignment prompt, discussion questions or problem set connected to the chapter.

Write a small number of tasks in the form the course expects:

  • explain how a mechanism works;
  • compare two theories or cases;
  • use a formula under the correct conditions;
  • identify the evidence supporting an argument;
  • label a structure and describe its function.

“Understand chapter four” offers no finish line. “Explain why increasing substrate concentration eventually stops increasing reaction rate” can guide the reading and become a closed-book question afterward.

Use several questions across the chapter. A question directs attention to the material it asks about, so one good prompt should not be treated as complete coverage.

Preview the chapter's structure

Scan the section headings, figures, worked examples, summary and end-of-chapter questions before reading closely. The goal is orientation: identify the major sections, see where the assigned task appears, and notice which parts depend on earlier material.

This preview should remain brief. Reading the summary three times before starting the chapter only moves the same problem forward. Once the structure is visible, begin the first relevant section.

Read one section, then produce an answer

Work with a logical section rather than waiting until the end of the chapter. A useful stopping point might be one mechanism, one argument, one worked example or one cluster of related definitions.

While reading, keep annotations selective:

  • mark the sentence that answers the section's main question;
  • record an unfamiliar term that changes the meaning;
  • note a step in the reasoning that is unclear;
  • connect the section to a lecture, assignment or earlier concept.

At the stopping point, close the book and answer the question. Write a short explanation, sketch the process, solve a similar problem or state the claim and its evidence. The response should match the academic task; recalling a definition is not the same as using it in a case or calculation.

The section-by-section routine is a practical way to apply quizzing, rather than the exact design tested in the research. A meta-analysis of 222 independent classroom studies found a medium average improvement from quizzing, with results varying according to feedback, repetition, material match, quiz-to-assessment format match and other study conditions.

Check the answer and repair the smallest gap

Open the chapter and compare the attempt with the source. Look for four different outcomes:

  • accurate: the important idea was produced correctly;
  • incomplete: the answer had the structure but missed a condition, step or example;
  • confused: two terms, mechanisms or arguments were mixed together;
  • unsupported: the answer sounded plausible but was not grounded in the chapter.

Return to the smallest passage that resolves the problem, then try the answer again without looking. Copying the entire section creates more notes but hides the exact point that failed.

For mechanisms, worked examples and arguments, explain why each step follows. A meta-analysis of prompted self-explanation found a medium overall learning benefit across a range of instructional conditions. The practical use is specific: connect the step to the principle instead of restating the sentence in different words.

Build a question list for the later review

Finish the reading with a question list that can be used for later retrieval. If a summary is also useful for the course, turn its main claims into questions instead of treating the summary itself as evidence that the material can be recalled.

Useful questions often ask for more than a term:

  • What causes the process to begin?
  • Under which condition would this rule stop applying?
  • How do these two models explain the same evidence differently?
  • Which step in this solution determines the method?
  • What evidence would weaken the author's conclusion?

Return to the questions during a later study session with the chapter closed. Spacing and retrieval both have broad support, but research does not provide one universal delay for every subject and assessment. Adapt the questions to the subject

Biology and other content-heavy sciences: Combine labels with mechanisms. After naming the parts of a nephron, explain what changes across each section and under which conditions.

Math, physics and statistics: Cover the worked solution, identify why its method applies, and solve a comparable problem. A formula card cannot establish that the correct formula will be chosen in a new problem.

History and social sciences: Track claims, evidence, causation and competing explanations. A useful answer connects evidence to an argument rather than listing isolated dates or names.

Literature and philosophy: Record the passage or premise supporting an interpretation, then explain the connection without the page open. Keep alternative readings visible when the course expects comparison rather than one settled answer.

A weekly reading routine

Before the lecture or discussion: Preview the chapter and write the course tasks that will guide the reading.

During the reading: Stop after each logical section, close the source, and produce the relevant explanation, comparison or solution.

After the chapter: Keep a short question list based on the main tasks and the gaps found during checking.

At a later session: Answer those questions without the chapter, use feedback to locate the remaining weakness, and reread only the section needed to repair it.

Apply the routine to the important sections rather than turning every paragraph into a flashcard. Each section should produce evidence about what can and cannot yet be done.

Is highlighting a bad study technique?
