How to focus while studying: A practical guide to phones, laptops and lectures

Build a study session that is easier to stay with. Learn how to handle phone distraction, laptop multitasking, breaks, lectures and active review.

A study session can disappear without anything dramatic happening. One message leads to a browser tab, the tab leads to a video, and ten minutes later the same paragraph has to be read again.

Better focus begins with a simpler setup. Give the next study block one clear job, make unrelated apps inconvenient to reach, and choose work that produces an answer instead of letting the hour dissolve into scrolling through notes.

Decide what the session needs to produce

“Study chemistry” leaves too many decisions open. Which chapter? For how long? What counts as finished? Every unanswered question gives a distracted brain another chance to negotiate.

Choose an output that can be completed and checked:

  • Solve five equilibrium problems and mark the steps that caused errors.
  • Answer every flashcard from this week's lecture once.
  • Read one section, close it, and write the three main ideas from memory.
  • Draft the opening paragraph and outline the next two sections of an essay.

The target should fit inside the time available. A finished 30-minute task is more useful than an ambitious three-hour plan that never becomes specific enough to start.

Put the phone where it cannot start a second task

Research on a phone that is merely sitting nearby is mixed. A widely discussed 2017 study found lower performance on working-memory and reasoning tasks when participants' phones were close to them. A preregistered 2022 replication did not reproduce that result, and later reviews have found that any “mere presence” effect is smaller and less certain than the original headlines suggested.

Active phone distraction is a different question. Across controlled experiments, using a phone for unrelated activity while learning is associated with worse immediate recall. The practical problem is straightforward: time spent reading a message is time spent away from the lecture, textbook, or problem in front of you.

Before starting, use the amount of friction the situation needs:

Keep the laptop on the same assignment

A laptop can be the right tool for notes, research, accessibility, coding, or writing. The problem begins when the lecture or assignment shares the screen with unrelated tabs.

In a 2013 study, students watched short, university-style lectures in a simulated classroom. Participants assigned unrelated online tasks during the lecture scored lower on an immediate test than those who stayed on task. In a separate experiment, students who could see a nearby multitasker's screen also scored lower. The studies do not tell us exactly what will happen in every real course, but they show how easily off-task activity can interfere with learning in the moment.

Make the laptop boring for the length of the task. Close chat, email, shopping, news, and video tabs. Put the document, problem set, or lecture material full screen. If several sources are required, open only those sources and the place where the answer is being produced.

Course-related device use is still course-related work. A blanket “never use a laptop” rule ignores students who need one and classes designed around digital material.

Choose a study block that fits the task

There is no research-backed study interval that works for everyone. Twenty-five minutes is not a universal attention limit, and a timer cannot make an unfocused 50-minute block productive.

Pick a block long enough to complete the target and short enough to feel reachable. A 25-minute Pomodoro can help when starting feels difficult. A 45-minute block may suit a problem set that takes time to get into. The timer's job is to define when the current task ends and when everything else can be checked.

Short breaks can reduce fatigue and improve how people feel, but evidence that micro-breaks consistently improve demanding cognitive performance is less clear. Treat the break as recovery: stand up, get water, stretch, or look outside. If feeds tend to overrun your breaks, avoid opening one until the study block is finished.

Make the work active enough to show when attention leaves

Rereading can continue while the mind is elsewhere. Work that requires an answer makes the gap easier to notice.

After reading a section, close it and write what it explained. Solve the problem before looking at the worked solution. Use flashcards, a short quiz, or the blurting method to retrieve the material, then check every answer against the course source and correct errors.

Retrieval practice has strong evidence for improving later memory. It is not a guarantee of constant focus, but it gives the study block a series of visible decisions instead of one long instruction to “keep reading.”

If an unrelated thought appears, write one line on a scrap page and return to the current question. That note preserves anything genuinely important without turning it into a new task halfway through the session.

Focus during a lecture without trying to capture every word

Listening, understanding, and taking notes can happen together, but no note-taking method captures everything. Trying to transcribe a fast lecture word for word can leave little time to think about the explanation as it unfolds.

  1. Choose the finish line. Write: “Explain glycolysis from memory, then answer ten practice questions.” Put the phone across the room and close unrelated tabs.
  2. Attempt the material before reopening the notes. Draw the pathway or explain it on a blank page. Uncertain steps get a question mark rather than a guess presented as fact.

That is an example, not a required schedule. A statistics problem set may need a longer block, while vocabulary review may work well in several shorter rounds. Keep the structure—one target, fewer distractions, an attempt, a correction, and a clear next step—and adjust the timing to the course.
