Handwriting vs typing notes: Which helps you learn more?

Is handwriting better than typing notes? Research is mixed. Learn what each method does well and how to choose the right one for your classes.

A lecture moves faster than most people can write. A keyboard makes it easier to capture more of what the professor says, while a pen usually produces fewer, shorter notes. Which one leaves more in memory when the test arrives?

Research does not identify one universal winner. Some studies find a small advantage for handwriting, while others find no reliable difference. Typing consistently produces longer and more word-for-word notes, but more words do not automatically create better learning. Attention, the structure of the notes, and the way they are reviewed all affect what happens next.

That gives college students a more useful answer than a blanket laptop ban: choose the method that works for the class, then build a review process around it.

Where the handwriting advice came from

In 2014, researchers Pam Mueller and Daniel Oppenheimer compared students who took lecture notes by hand with students who used laptops. In two experiments with an immediate test, the longhand groups performed better on conceptual or application questions. Differences on factual questions were absent or inconsistent.

The researchers also noticed a clear difference in the notes. Laptop users wrote more words and copied more of the lecture verbatim. They proposed that this style of capture might leave less room for selecting, organizing, and connecting ideas during class.

The third experiment tested students a week later and allowed some of them to study their notes first. A 2018 correction to the paper clarified the result: there was no overall advantage for one note-taking method. The strongest performance came from students who had handwritten notes and later studied them.

The difference in note length and word-for-word copying was clear. The reason for any difference in learning was harder to establish because the study did not experimentally isolate that proposed mechanism.

What later studies found

A 2019 direct replication again found that laptop notes were longer and more verbatim. It did not find a reliable overall test advantage for handwriting. In one experiment, students who took no notes performed similarly to the note-taking groups on the material that was tested. Creating a record during class, by itself, did not guarantee higher performance in that experiment.

A preregistered 2021 replication reached a similar conclusion. Students typed more and copied more phrases, but neither group had a reliable advantage on factual or conceptual questions. The researchers' combined analysis of eight same-day laboratory experiments found an effect close to zero.

The larger reviews are mixed too:

  • A 2022 meta-analysis designed to separate note-taking from digital distraction found essentially no average learning difference between handwriting and typing.
  • A 2024 meta-analysis of college lecture studies found a small average advantage for handwritten notes, along with a large advantage for typing in the amount of material recorded.

Those findings can coexist because the studies used different lectures, tests, delays, and opportunities to review. They also measured average results across groups. A small average advantage does not tell every student what will work best in every course.

Typing changes the notes more reliably than it changes the grade

Across the major studies, typing tends to produce longer notes with more language copied directly from the lecture. Handwriting tends to produce shorter notes because the writer cannot match speaking speed.

Each style has practical uses. A detailed typed record can help in a course packed with names, definitions, or technical vocabulary. Shorter handwritten notes can suit classes where diagrams, spatial layout, and selective summaries make the material easier to follow.

The risky habit is copying without checking whether the idea makes sense. That can happen on a laptop, with a pen, or inside a beautifully organized study guide. Strong notes capture relationships, examples, questions, and points of confusion alongside the facts.

Laptop distraction is a separate problem

Typing and multitasking are often treated as the same issue, but the research separates them. In two small simulated-classroom experiments, students assigned to browse unrelated websites during a lecture scored lower on an immediate test. Students seated where they could see those screens also scored lower.

That study measured off-task browsing, not the effect of typing notes. A laptop used only for the lecture avoids the specific behavior that researchers tested. Focus can still vary from one student and class to another.

If notifications, messages, or open tabs repeatedly pull attention away, handwriting may be the easier choice. If a laptop is necessary for accessibility, speed, search, or course software, a full-screen notes document and muted notifications can reduce those interruptions.

Choose the method that fits the class

The most practical choice may change from one course to another.

Handwriting can work well when:

  • Diagrams, arrows, equations, or page layout are part of the explanation.
  • Writing fewer points helps with identifying the structure of the lecture.
  • A screen makes it harder to stay focused.

Typing can work well when:

  • The lecture includes unfamiliar terms, names, or definitions that will be needed later.
  • Searchable notes make weekly review easier.
  • Typing is faster, more comfortable, or better suited to an accessibility need.

A mixed approach is reasonable too. A tablet can combine handwriting with searchable storage, and a laptop document can include quick sketches or photos of permitted board work.

Make the notes useful after class

Note-taking can support learning in two ways. Selecting and organizing information during the lecture can help with the first pass through the material. The saved notes can then support review after class. Research on note-taking finds benefits from both functions, especially when students return to their notes instead of treating the first draft as finished.

A simple review workflow works with either handwriting or typing:

  1. Find the central ideas. Mark the concepts, processes, or arguments that organize the lecture. A long list of isolated details is harder to study than a few clear relationships.
  2. Resolve open questions. Use the assigned reading, slides, or another approved course source to clarify anything that remained confusing.
  3. Close the notes and retrieve. Explain the topic from memory, answer a question, or draw the process without looking. The blurting method is one structured way to do this.
  4. Return in later sessions. Revisit missed material rather than rereading the entire page. A spaced repetition schedule can help organize those later checks.

Consider a psychology lecture that compares negative reinforcement with punishment. A useful note records the distinction, one example of each, and the point that remains confusing.
