How to read research papers for a literature review

Third pass: Extract only what the review will use
Return to the sections that contain the relevant evidence. Record the specific result, the context needed to interpret it, and a page number, table, figure, or section locator. Capture an exact quotation only when the wording itself matters.
This final pass prevents a common problem: a detailed note that still cannot support a sentence in the review. The extraction should make the paper easier to compare and cite, rather than reproduce the paper in miniature.
Give every paper the same evidence note
Consistent fields make differences visible. Create one note per paper with the following structure:
- Paper ID: A short label, such as the first author and year.
- Full citation: The citation-manager entry or permanent link.
- Research question: The question the paper actually addresses.
- Population or material: Who, what, where, and when the study covers.

Begin a paragraph with the point the sources collectively support. Then introduce papers according to their relationship to that point: agreement, extension, qualification, or conflict. Use this planning frame before drafting:
Section claim: [what this group of papers shows]

Interpretation:

The frame keeps the writer's argument in control. It also makes weak transitions visible. If Paper B appears only because it shares a keyword with Paper A, the paragraph needs a stronger relationship or a different source.
Remember the papers without loosening citation accuracy
Recalling a paper's structure after closing the note can make it easier to remember later. In a 2011 experiment using science texts, students who practiced retrieval performed better on later comprehension and inference questions than students who created concept maps.
Apply that finding narrowly. After finishing an evidence note, close it and reconstruct the paper's question, method, main result, and most important limitation. Reopen the note immediately afterward and fill the gaps. The exercise helps keep papers distinct; the original source remains the authority for quotations, statistics, and citations.
